Eminent religious leaders and renowned scholars from China and abroad attended and presented at the first symposium. Buddhist aesthetics is a value theory combining religion, history, art and craftsmanship. It transcends Buddhist religion alone, and delves into a theory entails rich intellectual creativity and the making of artifact. From multiple angles, it studies the aesthetic value of the medium for the diffusion of Buddhism. It reveals in clear threads the changing existence of art during the developing process of religion, and the power of art as both inherently religious and outwardly appealing.

The religion of Buddhism emphasizes upon education through visualization and art. Buddhists believe making statues and drawing thangka could bring auspicious benefits. The teaching of sutra is not enough to bring people towards dharma. Seeing is the most convincing. The image of Buddha is close to the real witness. The image of Buddha attracts people with its divine beauty, and exerts subtle influence upon people’s heart and mind, as if brings people closer to the realm of Buddha. Taking this as the point of departure, the 2012 symposium invites renowned Buddhist art specialists from China and abroad to discuss with various Buddhist artworks from religious, mundane, academic and market-oriented perspectives.

2012 symposium has invited renowned Tibetan art scholar Ian Alsop, Amy Heller, Jane Casey, Jeff Watt, David Weldon, Christian Luczanits, Karl Debreczeny, Broeskamp Bernadette, Karen Weisenborn, researcher of Beijing Capital Museum Huang Chunhe, researcher of Beijing Palace Museum Luo Wenhua, and researcher of China Tibetology Research Center Xiong Wenbin.
